Packing and Loading

With a DITY move you assume the responsibility for packing as well as loading and unloading your belongings (unless you contract with a full service mover). This is no small task but can be accomplished smoothly with some planning and the proper supplies.

Remember that the cost of packing supplies can be listed as an expense when you file for reimbursement from the government. Make sure you keep all of the receipts for items you purchased. Establishing a file for them is a good idea.

Helpful Hints:

  • Give yourself plenty of time to pack. Start packing a couple of months prior to loading the truck. Begin with items you don't use on a daily basis.
  • If possible, try to get boxes from new neighbors when they move in, even if you have months before your expected move. This can be a major saving!
  • Be sure you only use sound boxes. Saving a little money by packing your possessions in free but worn-out boxes can lead to damage in shipping. Find good-quality, inexpensive boxes here.
  • Set an area of your home aside to stack boxes as you pack them. This will help to avoid living for weeks with boxes all over the place.
  • If you have a multi-level home, consider packing boxes on the main (or exit) floor. It is much easier to carry individual items to the main floor than it is to haul fully-loaded cartons up or down stairs.
